Somedays it pays to shave...

I went to see Blood Diamond on Saturday night with Sarah. It was a mutual decision*. On first observation it seemed a powerful and very violent indictment of the diamond trade. And to some extent, on second and third observations, it remains a powerful (and violent) indictment of the diamond trade. But it also came across as a rather patronising movie about Africa, and when Wendy sends me a link, I'm gonna link to someone from Cape Town who agrees with me (the guys at AllMovie.com get it pretty close here).

Anyways, being someone who is in the habit of shaving once a fortnight (I like my stubbly look - it reminds me I have testosterone, and on the whole I'm too lazy too shave in the firs place), it sometimes pays to shave. 'Cos you never know when your evening is going to end with a damn good snog.

*As a violent movie to go to on a first date, it comes a distant second to the time I went and saw David Lynch's Wild at Heart. Although that was most definitely her choice.

I don't concur with your assumption that a violent movie is unlikely to lead to a DGS. The entire horror genre backs me up with this I think.

I read that they were thinking of having an african character instead of Leonardo, but that would have impacted the ratings. It's a bit of a trade off between profile and authenticity. If it had had realistic characterisation it would have become an art-house movie and only been seen by the usual suspects.

Isn't Sarah married?

I'm not sure I assumed that a violent movie would not lead to a DGS. It was just a detail that added to my amusing tale.

I'm not naive enough to believe that any movie that is 'worth-its-salt-and-can-stand-on-its-own merits-but-doesn't have A-List talent' can make it, a la Good Will Hunting, but I like to hope that they can.

Most Sarah's (fine people to a woman)I know are married. Happily, this one isn't.

By the way, being the lefty-trendy-hippy-but slightly bourgeois pratt that I am, I've discovered pomegranate this month. It's good.

Richard,

I would like you more if you didn't keep giving me reasons to be jealous! First traveling through india and nepal, and now hooking up with some chick.

Consider our friendship officially on rocky grounds....

Chris,
Sorry, man. You're right. I'll give myself a papercut at work today.

But seriously, if you can get some, try the pomegranate.
